Germany Study Abroad Program

Germany Study Abroad Program (George Mason University)

Since 2022, Annette Nicke (project A15) has been hosting a group of students from the USA for one day every two years as part of George Mason University’s four-week “Germany Study Abroad Program”, during which they learn about universities, laboratories, and culture in Germany. This July, 17 students from four different universities will be visiting.

Program Overview

The World Economic Forum ranks Germany as the most innovative country in the world.  The best of German science, culture, and history awaits you in this four-week course that highlights visits to world-renown universities and research institutes. You will be able to apply what you learned in your STEM courses to real-world applications. You'll be able to discuss the hottest Neuroscience and Technology research by speaking (in English) with the scientists themselves during these personal tours. We will visit ancient castles such as where Hildegard von Bingen devised medicines in the 1100s and learn about the history of innovation including Gutenberg's first printed book from the 1450s. We will explore the cultural differences and similarities between living and "doing science" in Europe vs North America. We will prepare our STEM students for each visit with Mason faculty-led reviews and visit previews. The program satisfies both Global Understanding (pending approval) and Synthesis core requirements, and requires four days of on-campus orientation prior to departure.

Program Highlights

  • Visit world-renowned universities and research institutes, learn about the hottest research and chat directly with the scientists.
  • Learn the significance of sites of beauty and cultural and  historical significance in Frankfurt, Berlin, and Munich.
  • Synthesize knowledge from Neuroscience, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, and Math courses and see it in real-world applications.
